What is Ads or Advertising? - For Beginners

Dear visitors, In this lesson, I'll explain the various ad types that you will come across when you'll start joining the affiliate networks from the next chapter.

Ads, or advertising, are messages or content designed to capture your attention and persuade you to perform a specific action, such as purchasing a product, using a service, or changing your behavior.

Ads are everywhere—on TV, online, in magazines, and on billboards. There are several types of advertising, which we are going to discuss.

  • Text Ads

A text ad is a form of online paid advertising that is typically just text with a link to your site and copy with a description of the promotion one is offering.

They are generally offered through search engine advertisers like Google and Bing. They generally appear along the sides of the search engine results page.

The words used in these paid text ads are bid on as part of a company’s keyword research and management strategy.

  • Banner Ads

It is simply a hyperlink built into a graphic instead of a hyperlink in text format as you see in a simple text ad (explained above).

When a user clicks on the banner ad, the hyperlink directs him to a new website related to the advertisement.

Such types of ads are multisensory; that is, users can read the message on the ad while being able to look at a visual representation. This increases the interest, recognition, and, more importantly, action!

A web widget
is a small program that you can easily put on your website, blog, or personalized start page.
A common example of a widget that most of us run across almost every day are those Google advertisements.
These ads are produced by placing a small piece of code on the web page.

How Can I Use a Web Widget?

Widgets aren't limited to advertisements. A widget can be anything from a voting poll to a weather forecast to a list of current headlines to a crossword puzzle.

You can utilize them in your blog to provide an interactive experience for your readers, or you can place them on your personalized start page to get at information you want to see on a regular basis.

Widgets can be used to track visitors to the website and provide information on how the visitor found the website.

They can also be used to provide syndicated content, such as relevant content from the Associated Press, or information like stock quotes.

Installing a web widget on your site, whether it be a personalized start page or a blog, is a simple matter of copying the code and pasting it into the appropriate place on your site.

You can highlight the code with your mouse and either choose edit-copy from your browser menu or hold down the control key on your keyboard and type the letter 'C'.

Pasting the code is a little more difficult because you need to know where to go to paste it. If you use a popular blog host like Blogger, you can search through their help documents and frequently asked questions for information on where to go to install a widget.

Once you know where to paste it, the hard part is over. Simply follow the instructions, and then choose edit-paste from your browser menu to paste the code, or click Ctrl and letter V.

Twitter widget:

A Twitter widget displays usually 3-5 of your most recent tweets and also provides a link to your Twitter profile so people can easily follow you.

The widget pulls information from your Twitter account and updates the feed to the widget in real time.

Mailing List:

This lets people enter their email address into a small form and join your mailing list.

Calendar:

There are a wide variety of calendar widgets out there, but the idea is the same.
